If you are reading this, you have probably failed JAMB this year.Maybe it was your first attempt. Maybe it was your second. Either way, you are probably disappointed, frustrated, or wondering what went wrong. And honestly, that is okay. Failure hurts, especially when you have worked hard and had hopes for what would come next.But please, do not let one examination convince you that you are not intelligent or that your future is over.Failing JAMB is a setback, not a life sentence. It has happened to many intelligent and capable students, and it does not determine what you can eventually become.So take a moment to process what happened. Feel the disappointment, learn from it, and then start thinking about what comes next.

I failed JAMB three times before I finally gained admission into the university. Today, I am a graduate and part of the labour market. I am also a web design expert and digital marketing expert, and I lead one of the biggest web design companies in Abuja. Now, it all started after I failed my first JAMB. Instead of wallowing in depression, I decided to enrol in a computer school, and it sparked my interest in tech.

Learning a tech skill during this time can help you make productive use of your time, create opportunities to earn an income, and develop a flexible skill that can remain valuable even when you eventually enter the university.

Use Your Time Productively:

I tell you, wholeheartedly, if you start learning a tech skill today as a JAMB student, whether it is web design, digital marketing, data analytics, AI, etc., in six months, you could already have developed a skill that can put you in a position to apply for a junior role or start doing small jobs for people. Instead of spending the whole year waiting for another JAMB examination, you are using that same time to build something that can benefit you in the future.

For example, if you start learning web design today and consistently practise for the next six months, you could already be able to build websites for small businesses, individuals, or organisations. With this skill set, you stand a chance of being ahead of graduates who have left school with little or no practical skills.

Create Financial Oppportunities:

Another major reason why I believe you should learn a tech skill while waiting for your next JAMB is the financial opportunity that comes with it. You don't necessarily have to wait until you graduate from university before you start making money from the skills you have learnt. When you enter the university, you can use your skill to freelance and earn some income while still studying.

For example, if you learn how to use AI tools, you can help businesses create content, automate simple tasks, generate ideas, analyse information, or improve their online marketing. You can offer these services to small businesses and individuals who need them but don't know how to use AI effectively. You can also work with clients outside Nigeria through freelance platforms or remote opportunities. A junior entry-level position in some of these roles can earn around ₦300,000 in Nigeria, while international opportunities can pay around $1,000 or more depending on the skill, experience, and type of work.

It is being used to create content, analyse information, automate tasks , build wesbsites and solve business problems.You can start by learning how to use popular AI tools and understanding how they can help people and businesses become more productive.

2. Web Design

Website design involves creating websites for businesses, organisations and individuals. As more businesses move online, there will continue to be opportunities for people who can build professional websites.

You don't need to spend six months watching tutorials without actually doing anything. If you want to turn a tech skill into something useful, you need a simple plan and consistent practice.

Choose one skill.

Don't try to learn AI, web design, digital marketing, data analytics and video editing at the same time. Pick one that interests you and focus on it. You can always learn another skill later.

Find learning resources.

You don't need to spend a lot of money to start. There are free and affordable resources on YouTube, Coursera, Udemy and local tech hubs. Find a good beginner course and follow it consistently.

Build real projects.

This is where many beginners make a mistake. They spend months watching tutorials but have nothing to show for it. Start building as you learn. Create a website, analyse a dataset, edit videos or manage a social media page. Your projects will eventually become your portfolio.

Join tech communities.

Don't learn alone. Join communities on X, LinkedIn and other online platforms. Connect with developers, designers, marketers and other people learning the same skill. You can learn from their experiences, find opportunities and build relationships that can help you grow.
